My Visit to the Liftlock Cruise in Peterborough, Ontario

Two weeks ago, I had the chance to experience the Liftlock Cruise in Peterborough, Ontario, and it turned out to be one of those surprisingly memorable day trips that sticks with you long after you’ve gone home. I had heard about the famous Peterborough Lift Lock before, but seeing it in person and actually cruising through the Trent-Severn Waterway was a completely different experience.

The day started with beautiful weather, which immediately put me in a good mood. As I boarded the cruise boat, I noticed a mix of tourists, families, and fellow curious travelers. Everyone seemed excited, although I suspect some were mainly there for the snacks and the chance to sit on a boat for a few hours. I can relate.

As the cruise began, the scenery quickly became the star of the show. The waterways were calm, the trees were lush and green, and the peaceful atmosphere made it easy to forget about emails, deadlines, and the endless notifications waiting back on my phone. Nature has a funny way of reminding us that not every message needs an immediate reply.

One of the highlights was learning about the history of the Trent-Severn Waterway. The guides shared interesting facts throughout the journey, explaining how this engineering marvel helped connect communities and transport goods across Ontario. It was educational without feeling like a classroom lecture, which is always appreciated.

Of course, the main attraction was the Peterborough Lift Lock itself. Standing at an impressive 65ft high, it is one of the highest hydraulic lift locks in the world. Watching the massive lock chambers rise and lower boats was fascinating. It felt a bit like watching a giant water-powered elevator, except much slower and with significantly better views.

As our boat entered the lock, I found myself paying close attention to every movement. The process seemed almost magical, even though I knew it was based on engineering and physics. There was something satisfying about watching a system designed over a century ago continue to function so effectively today.

The cruise also gave me plenty of opportunities to simply relax and enjoy the surroundings. There is something calming about being on the water, listening to gentle waves and watching the shoreline drift by. For a few hours, my biggest responsibility was deciding whether to take another photo or just enjoy the view.

Naturally, I took plenty of photos anyway. In fact, I probably took enough pictures of the Lift Lock to accidentally qualify as its unofficial marketing department. Every angle seemed worth capturing, and I wasn’t the only one holding up a phone or camera throughout the trip.

What impressed me most was how the experience combined history, engineering, and natural beauty into a single outing. Whether you’re interested in local heritage, impressive infrastructure, or simply spending time outdoors, the Liftlock Cruise offers a little bit of everything. It manages to be both educational and relaxing at the same time.

Looking back two weeks later, I’m glad I made the trip to Peterborough. The Liftlock Cruise was more than just a boat ride; it was a chance to experience one of Ontario’s most unique landmarks from a perspective you can’t get on land. If you’re looking for a memorable day trip, I’d definitely recommend adding it to your list. Just make sure your phone is fully charged, because resisting the urge to take dozens of photos is practically impossible.
