Having a sense of style on a limited budget is possible.
You don’t have to spend a lot to look well dressed and put together; it is not how much you spend but the pieces you choose.
I know someone who shops at the thrift store and is always the best dressed at all events. This is because she has an eye for picking out the good brands of clothing that is new or slightly used. Yes, the value village carries NEW stuff.
You could be wearing the most expensive clothing, but if they are not fitted, pressed/ steamed, or clean, then you get the “roll out of bed” look. The secret to looking “expensive” is tailored pieces, good fabric, and great accessories, what does this all lead to? Confidence! That’s the best thing you can wear.
Ready to elevate your wardrobe? Here are some tips on how to look and feel your best.
Tailored Pieces
Buy clothing that fits! Use dressing rooms before you buy; that’s why they are there. Make sure everything fits your body comfortably, use full-length mirrors, and check the back and front of your body. If it’s something you must have, but it’s not your fit, then have it tailored.
Remove Wrinkles
To avoid that “roll out of bed” look, press or steam your clothing. Wrinkles can make even the most expensive clothing look ragged and old. Just throwing on an outfit as an afterthought gives the impression that you don’t care, and I am a big believer that FIRST IMPRESSIONS MATTER. Make sure your clothing is clean, and pressed, and use a lint roller when needed.
Colour Code
Dressing in clashing colours often looks tacky. Avoid this look by wearing Monochrome outfits. This is dressing in a single colour, but you can add a piece in the same colour code but in a darker shade to add depth. You can also play up the colours of your accessories to add some flair. Monochrome outfits are effortless, and they look put together and expensive.
The Blazer Impact
Blazers can elevate any outfit. You can add a blazer to jeans and a tank top turning it into a luxe outfit. They complete any look, whether it’s casual or formal, they go with basically anything. Blazers can add that pop of colour a Monochrome outfit needs.
Statement Pieces
Invest in some statement pieces. These are very common in capsule wardrobes. They are usually a bit more expensive than your basic pieces, but you get so many uses out of them. You can mix and match and make multiple outfits from just a few pieces. They are worth the investment.
Accessorize!!
Accessories can be a game changer. A good purse and shoes can elevate your outfit, throw in some sunglasses and a chic necklace, and you will turn heads. A nice scarf can also add that classy look and remember to stay in colour range.
Tip: Do not pair huge earrings with chunky necklaces. This can look tacky and takes focus away from your face and outfit.
Makeup
I am not here to tell you to wear less or more makeup. However; there may be occasions where it would be more appropriate to wear a more soft, earth tone makeup look. Club makeup will not be appropriate for a business meeting/ lunch. Make sure to blend your foundation/ powder down to your neck to complete that flawless look.
Pay Attention to Details
Sometimes we dress as best as we can but forget to check the minor details:
Check for loose threads on clothing and remove them.
Clean shoes after each wear, and wash sneaker laces regularly.
Tame any stray hairs in place with hair spray. Your hairstyle is a big part of your outfit.
